In San Francisco, marriage records are maintained by the Office of the County Clerk, located in City Hall. This office issues marriage licenses, registers returned marriage certificates after the ceremony, and keeps historical records of marriages conducted in the county. The Assessor-Recorder office also participates in storing and providing access to recorded documents, including marriage records. The Superior Court of the County does not maintain civil status records — for such requests, the court directs to the County Clerk.

The collection includes marriage licenses, registered marriage certificates, as well as confidential marriage licenses. Records after 1990 are available for viewing through the online tool Records Manager.
